Frequently Asked Questions About HCPSS Grading

How are final grades calculated in HCPSS?

Final grades are calculated differently based on the course type:

  • Full Year Courses: Each quarter is worth 20% of the final grade. Midterm and final exams are worth 10% each.
  • State-Assessed Courses: Each quarter grade and the state assessment are each worth 20% of the final grade.
  • Semester Courses: Each quarter grade is worth 40% of the final grade. The final exam is worth 20%.

Grades are converted to quality points (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, E=0) and then weighted according to the percentages above.

What is the HCPSS grading scale?

HCPSS uses the following letter grade scale:

  • A (90-100%): Outstanding level of achievement
  • B (80-89%): High level of achievement
  • C (70-79%): Satisfactory level of achievement
  • D (60-69%): Low level of achievement
  • E (Below 60%): Failure (no credit awarded)

For final letter grades, the following scale is used based on quality points:

  • A: 3.50-4.00
  • B: 2.50-3.49
  • C: 1.50-2.49
  • D: 0.75-1.49
  • E: Below 0.75 (No Credit)
How does weighted GPA work?

Weighted GPA adds additional quality points for more challenging courses:

  • AP and G/T courses: Add 1.0 quality point (A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0)
  • Honors courses: Add 0.5 quality point (A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5)
  • Regular courses: Standard quality points (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0)

Note: D and E grades receive no additional weight (D=1.0, E=0)

Weighted GPA is used for academic eligibility, honor roll, National Honor Society, and other activities requiring GPA reporting.

What are the high school promotion requirements?
  • To be promoted to grade 10: Students must have five credits including one English credit or one mathematics credit and one year of high school attendance.
  • To be promoted to grade 11: Students must have ten credits including one English credit and one mathematics credit and two years of high school attendance.
  • To be promoted to grade 12: Students must have fourteen credits including two English credits and two mathematics credits, have successfully passed Health I and Lifetime Fitness, and three years of high school attendance.
What do the various grade codes mean?
  • I (Incomplete): Used when a student has not been able to complete required coursework due to excused absences or other extenuating circumstances.
  • N/A (Not Available): Used when transfer students are missing grades from one marking period.
  • P (Pass): Used when a student successfully completes a course through credit by assessment or from non-accredited schools.
  • W (Withdrawal): Indicates that a student withdrew from a course after the designated date for withdrawal.
  • X (Late enrollment): Used when a student enrolls in a course too late for credit to be granted.
  • Z (Assessment not taken): Used when a student does not take a mid-term or final assessment for a course.
How many quality points do I need to pass a course?

To pass a course, your final quality point average must be at least 0.75 (which is a D).

The letter grade ranges for final grades are:

  • A: 3.50-4.00 quality points
  • B: 2.50-3.49 quality points
  • C: 1.50-2.49 quality points
  • D: 0.75-1.49 quality points
  • E: Below 0.75 quality points (No Credit)

Note: This is why D has a different range than the other grades.

What happens if I miss a final exam?

If you miss a final exam, you'll receive a Z (Assessment not taken) code. You must take the assessment within specific deadlines:

  • For a mid-term assessment: within four weeks (20 school days) following the administration of the assessment.
  • For a final assessment: no later than 10 days following the start of the next school year.

For graduating seniors, if you miss an assessment, an E will automatically be given (no Z code used).

If the Z code is not resolved within the deadline, it converts to an E for the assessment grade.

How are middle school grades calculated?

For middle school courses (not for high school credit):

  • Final grades are determined by averaging the quality points for each marking period.
  • Calculate the sum of all marking periods and divide by the number of marking periods (usually 4).
  • The same letter grade ranges apply: A (3.50-4.00), B (2.50-3.49), C (1.50-2.49), D (0.75-1.49), E (Below 0.75)

For high school credit courses taken in middle school, the same high school grading system applies, but the grades do not count toward the high school GPA.
